Heartburn and Coffee

Coffee has been related to heartburn for so long that it comes without saying that chronic sufferers of acid indigestion usually have to give up this favorite drink. What is it that makes coffee so hard on the digestive system? We know the stomach needs acid to digest food and that we feel fine long as this secretion keeps a normal level. But, caffeine stimulates the stomach to produce even more acid, which eventually culminates with a reflux in the esophagus. This is the why the relationship between heartburn and coffee.
Decaffeinated coffee is not harmful for the digestive system, but most people usually drink coffee for the caffeine. In fact, there are a lot of caffeine addicts around and they get headaches when they don’t get their shot of caffeine. We should note that those who suffer from coffee heartburns are chronic patients; unfortunately, studies show pessimistic results: in US for example one in five coffee drinkers suffer from acid reflux. Can this link be broken and people still have coffee safe from heartburn?
In order to reduce the harmful effects of coffee of the digestive system, some coffee producers have come up with new methods that made a successful attempt of breaking the connection between coffee and heartburn. The secret lies in how the coffee beans are prepared. Instead of roasting, a new method is used that passes the beans through high-pressured hot steam. As a result the toxic substances that are produced during the roasting process are completely eliminated. The technology is known as the Helva process and has been reported as a huge success on the market so far.
Doctors continuously warn patients against the dangers of heartburn in coffee drinking. Given the fact that heartburn can also lead to stress and anxiety, the ban on coffee is understandable. Besides heartburn, coffee is also said to contribute to the creation and maintenance of a stressful living patterns hence, saying no to coffee means being free of several problems at once. Thus, we could say that heartburn is only one of the many objections to coffee drinking!
